A Spring Fling with Little Beatnik

What is your business?
Little Beatnik

How did you come to name it that?
Our clothing is heavily based on the fifties. The term “Beatnik” means “someone who refuses to conform to established standards of conduct, a nonconformist in dress and behaviour.” We aim to provide an original drafted children's clothing line that stands out from the crowd so “Beatnik” just came to mind and we also design for “little” people.

What do you make?
Clothing for boys and girls aged newborn to 5 years. We also have a “Beatnik Bunny” soft toy which is loved by all ages. All the patterns used for Little Beatnik garments are drafted in house and tested on our children, cousins and friends. I love the freedom designing and drafting your own patterns provide. The pieces are also designed and made to be able to be mixed and matched together.
What are your two favourite things that you make? Why?
I love making the “Bettie Playsuit” as they are very cute.
The “Ruby overalls” are pretty fun to construct as well. I do like top stitching and these have quite a lot of top stitching in them.

What is your favourite season? Why?
Autumn!!! I LOVE sewing with wool blends and cashmere.

What’s something you’ve learnt that you wish you could go back and tell your 18 year old self?
Be the happiest you can be and thats all that matters.

Your 5 dream dinner guests (can be dead or alive, real people or fictional characters) and what would you serve for dessert?
Chocolate cake with cream.
I would invite Tim Burton. He is one of my all time fave directors, story tellers and animators. I might be selfish and only say one, as I would love to hear all his stories and if he was the only one there, I could hear even more stories. We went to his exhibition in Melbourne and it was one of the most inspiring amazing exhibits I have ever been to.

Quick 5:
What are you wearing right now?
PJs, its almost bed time
What can you hear?
Ruby Gloom, we love that cartoon!
What can you smell?
Last thing you ate?
Corn on toast
Last person you spoke to?
Cats, Clara named after Clara Bow a silent film star from the 1920s and Bonnie named after Bonnie Parker of Bonnie and Clyde. Its their dinner time.

Where can we find you? (Coming soon)
