A Spring Fling with Little Sew & Sews and Hero Nation (thats right folks, its a 2-for-1 Friday night special)

What is your business?
Little Sew & Sews and also Hero Nation

How did you come to name it that?
Little Sew & Sews came about as a play on words (little so and so's) as my friend and I quite often referred to our own munchkins as just that!

What do you make?
Little Sew & Sews is now primarily my outlet for designing my own softies & dolls and making them available as PDF Sewing Patterns. My signature design is the three piece softie tool set - which is now available in PDF and paper format, as well as pattern/fabric kits! For showcases I like to dabble outside my comfort zone and try new things that will only be one of a kinds.

What are your two favourite things that you make? Why?
I find making the softie tool sets incredibly relaxing, they are great to have on hand to stuff while catching up on shows in the evenings :) My other love is designing for Hero Nation, at the moment I am eagerly awaiting two new t-shirt designs, one for Christmas and another for all the 'quirky princesses' :)

What is your favourite season? Why?
I love spring, when it isn't raining, and the temperature is warm enough to have the windows open. (I don't love the hayfever I get with it though!)

What’s something you’ve learnt that you wish you could go back and tell your 18 year old self?
Don't put up with people that make you think less of yourself.

Your 5 dream dinner guests (can be dead or alive, real people or fictional characters) and what would you serve for dessert?

Real: Robin Williams (for a laugh), David Bowie (for the music and stories he would have!), George R.R. Martin (I'd be totally getting him tanked and finding out more about Jon Snow's parentage!) and my husband (to share it all with)
Fictional: Aragorn (for 'personal' reasons later when hubby is too busy listening to David Bowie's stories)
Dessert - got to be warm apple pie with vanilla ice cream :)

Quick 5:
What are you wearing right now?
Gym gear (boring!)
What can you hear?
Wind, rain and my cat snoring
What can you smell?
nothing 'stinky' for a change! (Boys are still in school)
Last thing you ate?
Home made Katsu chicken with home made tonkatsu sauce :)
Last person you spoke to?
My sons kindy teacher

A Spring Fling with Little Beatnik

What is your business?
Little Beatnik

How did you come to name it that?
Our clothing is heavily based on the fifties. The term “Beatnik” means “someone who refuses to conform to established standards of conduct, a nonconformist in dress and behaviour.” We aim to provide an original drafted children's clothing line that stands out from the crowd so “Beatnik” just came to mind and we also design for “little” people.

What do you make?
Clothing for boys and girls aged newborn to 5 years. We also have a “Beatnik Bunny” soft toy which is loved by all ages. All the patterns used for Little Beatnik garments are drafted in house and tested on our children, cousins and friends. I love the freedom designing and drafting your own patterns provide. The pieces are also designed and made to be able to be mixed and matched together.

What are your two favourite things that you make? Why?
I love making the “Bettie Playsuit” as they are very cute.
The “Ruby overalls” are pretty fun to construct as well. I do like top stitching and these have quite a lot of top stitching in them.

What is your favourite season? Why?
Autumn!!! I LOVE sewing with wool blends and cashmere.

What’s something you’ve learnt that you wish you could go back and tell your 18 year old self?
Be the happiest you can be and thats all that matters.

Your 5 dream dinner guests (can be dead or alive, real people or fictional characters) and what would you serve for dessert?
Chocolate cake with cream.
I would invite Tim Burton. He is one of my all time fave directors, story tellers and animators. I might be selfish and only say one, as I would love to hear all his stories and if he was the only one there, I could hear even more stories. We went to his exhibition in Melbourne and it was one of the most inspiring amazing exhibits I have ever been to.

Quick 5:
What are you wearing right now?
PJs, its almost bed time
What can you hear?
Ruby Gloom, we love that cartoon!
What can you smell?

Last thing you ate?

Last person you spoke to?
Cats, Clara named after Clara Bow a silent film star from the 1920s and Bonnie named after Bonnie Parker of Bonnie and Clyde. Its their dinner time.

A Spring Fling with Ms Midge

What is your business?
Ms Midge

How did you come to name it that?
Although my name is Melissa, my Dad named me Midge when I was born, because I was a tiny, scrawny little thing!  It stuck and I only started being called Melissa when I moved to Melbourne in my teens.  Add the “Ms” and that’s how my business name evolved!

What do you make?
I make quite a variety of items.  Over the past couple of years, I have made and sold a lot of little one’s clothing.  The past year has seen my business change a little, as I discovered a love and slight obsession with quilting.  I now thoroughly enjoy making and selling quilts and quilted cushions as well as little girl’s clothing.

What are your two favourite things that you make? Why?
Quilted cushions – they are reasonably quick to make and they give me the opportunity to play around with quilting techniques.
Quilts – I love it when a customer gives me a basic description of what they would like in a quilt.  For example, a colour theme.  And then they give me the thumbs up to come up with a design and layout.  It allows me to be creative!  I also love just making quilts because I want to – and then if somebody loves it enough to buy it – even better!

What is your favourite season?  Why?
I love Spring!  Living in Melbourne, we get the extremes of each season, and Spring is an inbetween season.  You still get the crisp mornings, but as you move through Spring, the warmth settles in and everything just seems brighter and happier.  I’m also more than ready to get out of my jeans and boots by then!

What’s something you’ve learnt that you wish you could go back and tell your 18 year old self?
Take you time.  Have fun.  Don’t settle for less than you deserve.

Quick 5:
What are you wearing right now?
PJ pants and a jumper

What can you hear?
The howling wind outside sounding like a cyclone!

What can you smell?
My new oven.

Last thing you ate?
Salt and Vinegar Delites

Last person you spoke to?
My kids at bedtime.

A Spring Fling with My China Doll

What is your business?
My China Doll

How did you come to name it that?
My daughter is half Chinese so she is my inspiration and my little china doll.

What do you make?
Custom made girls clothing (sized newborn-10years), custom made mama clothing, hair accessories, and lotus flower pin cushions.

What are your two favourite things that you make? Why?
Twirly special occasion dresses and lotus flower pin cushions.

I love making pretty, vintage inspired girls outfits using premium quality fabrics, buttons and trims. I only make clothes in the same style that I would dress my own daughter. I pride myself on being a perfectionist and my customers always comment on the quality of my work. Most little girls love to twirl so there is a lot of fabric that goes into these dresses for that reason.

The lotus flower pin cushions came about after I entered a pin cushion swap with some lovely handmaidens. I wanted my entry to be something unique and symbolic of my china doll. I designed the pin cushion based on my very popular lotus flower hair accessories. I am proud to say the design is my original creation and they now reside in quite a few handmaiden's sewing rooms :)

What is your favourite season?  Why?
Winter. I'm a snowboarding bunny and love the weather best when it's COLD and SNOWING!

What’s something you’ve learnt that you wish you could go back and tell your 18 year old self?

Your 5 dream dinner guests (can be dead or alive, real people or fictional characters) and what would you serve for dessert?

Vittorio Grigolo (talented and gorgeous Italian singer)

Heston Blumenthal (so he can cook me a gastronomical feast - I love to cook and eat lol)

Torah Bright (amazing Aussie female snowboarder - I have been a snowboarder for almost 15 years!)

As for dessert it has to be anything chocolate :)
